Broccoli rasam/ Broccoli dal rasam recipe

Rasam is the most famous dish for south Indians and will be served with rice which completes the meal of the day😋. Broccoli rasam will be spicy, little tanginess and gives amazing refreshing taste. Rasam is always the best dish which will be fabulous with hot rice and papad. Broccoli is one of the healthy and tasty vegetable.

I like to try different rasam varieties and broccoli rasam is one of them. I adopted recipe from this blog. Broccoli has very good health benefits and studies have suggested that by increasing consumption of broccoli decreases risk of obesity, diabetics, heart disease and increased energy and overall lower weight. You can find more health benefits of broccoli here. So I always try to incorporate broccoli in my regular diet. I always use broccoli for preparing paratha, upma, burrito bowl, soup and many more dishes. You can just bake broccoli with oil, chilli powder and salt till it becomes crispy it can be served as snacks or as side dish.

Spicy, tangy, refreshing broccoli rasam is served with hot rice and papad.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup broccoli
  • 1/2 cup toor dal
  • 1 tomato (chopped)
  • 2 tsp tamarind paste (or as required)
  • 3-4 curry leaves
  • 2 red chilli
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp jeera
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • a pinch asafoetida
  • 1 1/2 tsp rasam powder
  • 1 tsp coriander leaves
  • to taste salt
  • 2 tsp oil
Other ingredients
  • 1 tsp jeera
  • 7-8 kernels black pepper
  • 3-4 garlic
Instructions
  1. Wash the broccoli florets well , drain the water and keep aside.

  2. Soak toor dal pressure cook the dal smash it and keep aside.

  3. In a blender add jeera , garlic, black pepper and coarsely grind them or you can do in motar and pestle also.

  4. Heat oil in a pan add mustard, jeera, red chilli, curry leaves, asafoetida and saute for few seconds. 

  5. Now add coarsely grind jeera garlic mixture and saute for 2 min.

  6. Add broccoli florets with little salt and saute for few seconds , add turmeric, chopped tomato mix well close the lid for 1 min in medium flame.

  7. Then add smashed toor dal , water mix well.

  8. Add tamarind paste, rasam powder, salt mix well.

  9. Boil the rasam for 5-6 minutes till broccoli becomes soft.

  10. Finally garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot rasam with rice.

Preparation of broccoli rasam – step by step procedure

Note:

  • Adjust the quantity of rasam powder, tamarind paste according to your taste.
  • Adding rasam powder is optional but it gives amazing taste to the rasam.
  • Do not add more black pepper it gives more spicy to the rasam.
